It continuously surprises people how many rig careers are out there to choose from. The highly technical or the low-tech, oil jobs can encompass a wide array of fields. You can find oil rig careers today doing just about anything that you might desire.

Rig careers can include environmental engineers, responsible for working with the engineer, the driller and crew, as well as a lot of other fields and disciplines in order to assure that the oil can be produced and gotten from the ground leaving minimal impact to the world around us.

Drilling crews and the driller are those who are responsible for planning and implementing the actual production of the crude oil. It is their job to bring the oil up from the ground. Using various skills and techniques the driller will find the best and most efficient method that is available to get the oil out of the ground and to get it to the surface for transporting via truck or pipeline to the refineries.

Once the oil gets to shore, the pipeline workers, from engineers to laborers, are responsible for seeing the oil properly distributed to the refineries. Since most of our oil is moved from place to place now via the pipelines, employees who work the pipes are both well paid and secure in their positions.

Today more than ever before oil rig careers are up and coming. It is projected by the Labor Bureau that the oil and gas rig jobs are going to rise steadily over the next five years and well into the future.

Becoming employed for driller jobs these days will put you on a path of retiring early and having time to pursue your dreams and hobbies. Though both adventurous and arduous, oil rig careers are highly paid, and if you plan well and sock a chunk away with every paycheck, you’ll be able to enter your golden years well provided for.

There are a great many of areas in which you can choose to work, whether on a land based rig, or offshore, but most find it easier to start with a land-based crew, or in another area of the industry, such as the pipelines and transport, or well servicing, or the refineries.

These areas of the industry also pay very well, and there are a wide range of jobs to choose from, from the IT department, inspectors, technicians, laborers, pipe-fitters, chemists and a wide range of engineering specialties.

With the assistance of a good employment guide and the online recruiting resources that are available, almost anyone can start a new career in the offshore oil drilling industry simply by putting together a good resume and list of companies and jobs he or she is interested in, then applying and interviewing to the best of one’s ability. It is a common-sense axiom that those who sow, reap, so put out a little effort; you will be well rewarded.

People soon discover that the oil business can be a bit different from what they had imagined. Jobs drilling for oil are hard, and it can be backbreaking work. If you think otherwise, you are in for a real wake up call. But despite that, the rewards are very real, including high wages, fantastic friendships, and getting to see some pretty cool places. Getting hired is easy – provided you have some training under your belt and are applying for work in the right places, namely, where the drilling action is hot.

Once you have decided to make a go of it, becoming employed as a roustabout or roughneck usually means a lot of on the job training, and you will definitely get a lot of it. There are no real tricks to landing your first job working on a drilling crew, but having at least a training program under your belt can certainly help.

These jobs are basically doing a lot of hard work that you might find elsewhere, but just getting paid a lot more for it. You will be working rig jobs in heat, in snow, in rain and in many other climates that may not be much fun, but the people that you will be working with are working just as hard and are doing just as much to help you as they can.

Drilling for oil certainly does pay well, but many oil rig workers find that the close knit friendships that develop when working for such long hours and in difficult conditions is an even better benefit than the money and the extended time off. When you discover oil, the adrenaline rush is unlike anything you can imagine, and you will be sharing it with people you are close too – it’s a blast. Plus, knowing that you are helping provide for the needs of your country helps you to feel good about your work as well.

Dirty doesn’t begin to describe the oil drilling jobs that you will take on. Particularly the land based ones are going to be hot work, hard work, and dirty work. Those old commercials featuring the cowboy are pretty close to reality when it comes to oil drilling jobs. They just are not for everyone, and these days, it takes enough to train you and to get you moving in the right direction on your oil drilling jobs that your attitude has to be good in order for you to be taken on to train.

You see, the drilling outfits have a real investment in you once you are trained, and they’ll want you to stick around. But keep in mind if you have just come out of a training program, that there is a real difference between classroom instruction and the way things really are once you are in the field. Granted, classroom instruction will give you a good theoretical foundation about drilling and understanding the whole process, but no one really learns about exploring for oil until they have actually done it. For that reason, training programs that include some hands on work with an actual drilling operation are the best.

Realistically, if you’re still interested in oil drilling jobs, you can find out all that you need to know by applying on a land based oil rig and working there for a while. In many cases, the land based rigs are the same folks who will be hiring you for offshore oil work.

Offshore employment as a rigging roustabout is the bailout plan for the rest of us. We have all heard the news of the fat cat bankers on Wall Street getting bailed out with taxpayer money, then awarding themselves billions in bonuses at our expense, effectively rewarding themselves for blowing up the economy and throwing millions out of work. But where is the bailout for Main Street? For the 15 million people out of work right now, the campaign promises of our President ring hollow. Let’s face it – there is no bailout coming for the rest of us. We are on our own.

Oil offshore roustabout jobs are constantly increasing in demand even in the current economy, as the drilling contractors and energy companies are creating jobs in a large fashion. This is due to the fact that we are endeavoring to do two things at the same time: decrease imports, and increase domestic oil production.

Roustabouts offshore will usually be placed in a postion where they are working directly as a helper or assistant for someone in a more senior position. In many cases, this will mean working with the roughnecks on the drilling crew, or with the riggers and crane operators on the marine crew. Roustabouts could also find themselves working with the painters and welders, taking more of a maintenance role.

Indeed, it can without a doubt take a small amount of work to first break into the field, but if you know you are a hard-nosed working kind of man and are industrious in trying to meet your hopes, then you will have absolutely no issues with getting hired for your first offshore roustabout employment .

Lots have started a rewarding career on the offshore drilling rigs, and they are gratified to have done so, as many of them are now senior level, pulling down over six figures a year, and earning six months every year off to enjoy that hard earned treasure.

There isn’t just one ladder to climb from being a roustabout; there are many. You could go on to become a driller, a crane operator, a welder, even a maintenance supervisor. If you make a career out of it, with additional training and education, there is really no limits except the ones you place on yourself – many have gotten their start at the bottom and ended up running an entire drilling operation, and you can too.
